Master Your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels

This book changed my life. I have battled with my weight off and on since having children twenty years ago. I have never been obese, but I have been “overweight” according to the BMI chart. My weight impacted my self-confidence, even if I didn’t really realize it. I was able to remain active enough, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, snowboarding, etc., but I always felt a little awkward because my core strength and balance were mitigated. My son had “done” a Jillian Michaels workout video with a friend of his, in his living room, and even as a very fit, athletic young man, found himself challenged, and a little sore the next day. He recommended the video to me and I tried it. It was all I could do to get through the warm up the first time through. I stuck with it and within a week I was able to complete the video and felt pretty good about myself. Somewhere along the line, I stumbled across this book and bought it. I read it cover to cover in the course of a week and it scared the hell out of me. I was able to put into action about 75 – 80% of the recommendations and during the next year and a half lost fifty pounds, had a whole new energy level, and a whole new level of self-confidence. I have friends who have bounced from one fad diet to the next, who have worked out religiously for two years, who have taken other extreme measures to permanently lose weight and none of them have had lasting results. Or any results. The key is to follow as much of Jillian’s advice as you can afford/is practical. It is truly about remastering or as I like to say, re-engineering your metabolism. I gave the book to my daughter who wasn’t at all overweight to begin with, but still saw incredible results in body composition and energy levels. I now have the book on my Kindle and make an effort to re-read it annually, lest I forget any of the valuable lessons.
